Cart on a cable

One force, then a stopwatch and a tape measure.

A horizontal cable pulls a 200-kg cart along a horizontal track. The tension in the cable is 500 N. Starting from rest, (a) how long will it take the cart to reach a speed of 8 m/s? (b) How far will it have gone?as printed, page 51

2.5 m/s²the acceleration

A quarter of g. A car pulling away from a light does about this. Brisk, not violent.

3.2 sto reach 8 m/s

Eight metres per second is a sprint. The cable gets a 200 kg cart there in about the time it takes to say this sentence.

12.8 mdistance covered

Half of what it would cover at the final speed for the whole time, because it spent the time speeding up. The triangle on the graph.
